Abul AbbasAbul Abbas’ research is leading to a better understanding of chronic, debilitating and sometimes deadly autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and diabetes. In autoimmune diseases there is a failure in the biological mechanisms that the immune system uses to recognize and refrain from attacking our own molecules. For instance, Abbas has shed new light on how a molecule called IL-2, made by certain immune cells, plays a key role in inducing immune T cells targeted against our own molecules to commit suicide.
