In 1990, pharmaceutical chemist Charles Craik, PhD, discovered an inhibitor to HIV protease. The discovery validated the protease as a drug target and set the stage for creation of the class of drugs now known as protease inhibitors. Protease inhibitors are credited with a large reduction in the death rate among those infected with HIV, and have also been used to understand and combat other diseases, including malaria and Chagas’ disease.
