Joe DeRisiUCSF’s Joe DeRisi, PhD, is one of the creators of “microarray” technology now deployed in labs throughout the world. DeRisi and UCSF virologist Don Ganem used microarray technology to detect the SARS virus within 24 hours of receiving a sample from the CDC, and they quickly classified and genetically defined it. The researchers have developed and regularly update the ViroChip, a microarray containing DNA from every known virus. The ViroChip has proved to be a valuable experimental diagnostic tool in cases where serious infections stump experts.
