Suellen MillerSuellen Miller, CNM, PhD, is a nurse midwife, researcher, and international leader in reducing women’s deaths from pregnancy and childbirth. In 2007, following successful pilot projects in Egypt, Mexico and Nigeria, Dr. Miller launched a large randomized cluster trial in Zimbabwe and Zambia into a low-technology garment – a solution to maternal hemorrhage – designed to save thousands of women’s lives each year. She is also involved in a variety of other international projects such as investigating a home to hospital continuum of care for maternal health, investigating the links between infectious diseases and maternal health, and studying the effects of near-miss maternal mortality on contraceptive practices. She is Associate Professor, UCSF Dept. of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Director, Safe Motherhood Programs in the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health, Adjunct Associate Professor, Maternal Child Health Program, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley and Joint Medical Program, University of California, Berkeley and UCSF.
